2002 Balchen/Post Awards Presented Outstanding Achievement in Airport Snow and Ice Control

At the 36th Annual International Aviation Snow Symposium on May 1st, 2002, in Buffalo, NY; awards were presented to the "snow crews" of the airports in the Snow Belt for their dedicated efforts in maintaining their airports in safe and operational status during the 200 1-2002 winter season. This is the twenty-sixth consecutive year that such awards have been presented. All categories of airports - commercial, general aviation and military -throughout the United States and Canada compete for these awards.

Nominations for consideration for an award come from the users of airports - airlines, airline pilots, general aviation, corporate pilots, regional airlines, the military and even non-airport staff such as hotel owners, parking lot and ground transportation operators, chamber of commerce as well as the airports themselves. Applications are submitted on behalf of the local work force in recognition of their efforts of keeping the airport operational at all times.

The awards were presented to the following airports:

Small General Aviation (Less than 50,000 total operations per year)
Winner:
Southwest Michigan Regional Airport, Benton Harbor, Michigan

Large General Aviation(More than 50,000 total operations per year)
Winner:
Centennial Airport, Englewood, Colorado
Honorable Mention:
Salt Lake City Municipal Airport II, Salt Lake City, Utah

Small Commercial (Under 100,000 operations per year)
Winner:
Gerald R. Ford international Ai ort, Grand Rapids, Michigan

Medium Commercial (100,000 to 200,000 operations per year)
Winner:
Buffalo Niagara International Airport, Buffalo, New York

Large Commercial (Over 200,000 operations per year)
Winner:
Salt Lake City International Airport, Salt Lake City, Utah
Honorable Mention:
Ted Stevens International Airport, Anchorage, Alaska
Minneapolis/St. Paul International Airport, St. Paul, Minnesota

Military Airport

Winner:
Ellsworth Air Force Base, South Dakota
Honorable Mention:
52nd Civil Engineer Squadron, Spangdahlern Air Base, Germany
